Subject: Who is Beloved?
In: Albuquerque, NM, USA
Wow, an entire web page devoted to this book. I'm impressed.
Anyway, I've been discussing this book in my English class this week. The prof had us break up into groups to discuss a variety of questions. I chose the "Who is Beloved" question.
Discussing this with other people showed us that this question is not so easy to answer. It was proposed that she is a catalyst to help the town deal with their former slavery. Also, perhaps Beloved was a sort of guilt incarnate for Sethe. I even went so far as to propose that Beloved was actually Satan. Still, our answers concerning Beloved's identity were all different. What ideas do other people have to that question?
I also thought of a possible connection between Beloved, the quote at the beginning of the book from Romans 9:25, and the OT book of Hosea (particularly passages referring to the prostitute). Anybody want to jump on this and take it anywhere?
Comments appreciated.

Fantastic Book!!! Her writing is so descriptive. Just by reading What Baby Suggs was saying to the people on page 89 9in my book) where she begins by saying "Here," "in this place, we flesh; flesh that weeps, laughs; lfesh that dances on bare feet in the grass.....
I started to feel how as slaves, all those things such as, eating, breathing, seeing were treasured, but not by the people who owned them.
Another part of the book it was mentioned that as a mother it in vain to try to learn the traits and features of a newborn child, because they would be taken away or killed before they could become familar....
Again> Great Book
Would love to attend a reading of this book but, I have never heard of one in the Pensacola Florida area.
If anyone has info please respond.

1)Why did the story end talking about Paul D?
2)Did him and Seth stay together after he came back?
3)I don't have the book with me at this instant, but why is one of the last chapters in a poem form with the words in a dot form?
4)Did Beloved just disapear in front of the town women?
Hope someone can answer this college student's questions.

Hello! I am currently taking a Senior Seminar in Feminist Theory and Criticism. I am writing my term paper on the theory of female frienship in literature, and specifically, the way in which it is created in Morrison's novels (Bluest Eye, Sula, and Paradise). Right now, I am researching both Morrison and female friendship. I am especially interested in finding any differences between black and white female frienships and how that is portrayed. So, if anyone has any ideas about where I may find criticism in those two distinct areas, I would enjoy hearing about it. Thanks!

Hi, I'm a high school student writing an essay on Beloved. The argument is: Toni Morrison is careful not to make all the blacks wonderful and all the whites awful. She presents a balanced view of human behavior. There are many good and bad white people that I can think of. Certainly Amy Denver, the Garners, perhaps even Lady Jones could be included in the "good" category. Schoolteacher, and other whites are bad, awful, and evil. My problem is the "bad" blacks. I cannot think of any awful ones. Would you consider Beloved to be an awful black? Please Help!

First of all, I like this web. page. Really Great~!
Anyway, I have an essay assignment about "Beloved," and its final draft due is a week after from now on (Today: 28 July, 2001). But I have not gone through a book, yet, because I don't have enough time to read a whole book for some reasons..--;;), so I'm just reading its summaries, and I'm gonna watch its movie version tomorrow.
The essay prompt is..(According to my professor,)
Analysis of "Beloved"
"Write an essay examining how one of the central themes develops in Toni Morrisons' 'Beloved.'"
The themes that she gave us are..
Pride, love, community, motherhood, forgiveness, revenge, storytelling, and family.
Among them, I chose "love" and "revenge" as my central theme.
The thing is, to write my thesis statement, I should written down the page numbers where it is related to the theme and sum up the main points among them
(This is what she told us to do so.).
So, could you suggest the page numbers (quotes) that are related to the theme, and some explanaions for those?
Please, please, and please~!!!
If you can this favor, I'll be really appreciate about this..
Otherwise, I'd just sit down and cannot even start any work..
Okay?
Thank you and Bye..

Hi, I'm Chie.
I'm writing a thesis on Beloved by
Ms. Morrison.
(It's deadline is end of this year...)
But I'm not get on with it...so I wanna know opinions, advice,
and recommandation of critical books from people who read Beloved thoroughly.
In thesis,
I'm concentrate on "a kind of love".
About her daughter(Beloved) killing,
Sathe thinks it was love..
Why she thought so?
'Cause she could'nt find (or know) ways any other but killing.
'Cause her children are the best things she has.
Maybe she had to be a slave not only white people, but also her own visions
of love..
I can understand above thoughts.
However, Sathe's "closed love"
(or clinquish love) is peculiar?
I wonder if that "closed love" peculiar to her.
In my opinion, she is not the only one being peculuar to it, but all those
African-American women whose lives under
the circumstances of slavery may possibly be so.
I need your help!!
If someone knew where can I send a fan letter for Ms. Morrison, please tell me!
Thanks.
